They are attracting an increasing attention from the research community, the developers and practitioners. In this paper we consider P2P streaming systems based on mesh overlays and focus on the matter of automatically adjusting peer transmission rate to match the demand of the system and not overloading the uplink capacity of peers. We propose Hose Rate Control (HRC), a novel scheme to control the speed at which peers offer chunks to other peers in order to cotrol peer uplink capacity utilization. This is a critical issue to deal with in heterogeneous scenarios like the one faced in the Internet, where peer upload capacity is unknown and varies widely.
